Wild Style Letter A is a 1992 work by New York-based artist Rammellzee which embodies the elements of Wild Style graffiti. Wild Style graffiti is a genre in which various decorative elements are infused with letters, and words are abstracted in such a way that they almost resemble characters, or pictorial images, rather than text. Rammellzee’s artwork is based on his theory of Gothic Futurism, which describes the battle between letters and their symbolic warfare against any standardization enforced by the rules of the alphabet. His treatise, “Iconic Panzerisms," details an anarchic plan by which to revise the role and deployment of language in society.
Rammellzee (1960–2010) was a graffiti artist, writer, hip-hop musician, performance artist, and art theorist known for his East Village Wild Style tag work. This style, formed with a group of artists in the 1980s, was distinguished by its dynamic look, vibrant coloring, and highly stylized lettering derived from Gothic script. He has exhibited in various venues alongside artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Futura 2000, Keith Haring, and LA II, and his work is represented in the collection of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
